History of Echizen Washi

Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture, is the birthplace of Echizen washi paper, which boasts a long history of approximately 1,500 years. One of the characteristics of Echizen washi is that it is the only washi production center in Japan that enshrines Kawakamigozen, the god of paper, and the city cherishes the spirit of Echizen washi production.
Echizen washi was already being used to make excellent paper in the 4th and 5th centuries when paper was first introduced to Japan, as shown in ancient documents from Shosoin (the ancient storehouse of the Shogunate).
The paper industry developed as a production center of the highest quality paper, such as "Echizen Hosho".

It was in Echizen that Japan's oldest clan paper, "Fukui-han-fuda", and "Dajokan-kinpatsu paper" of the new Meiji government were made. The current Bank of Japan notes, which boast the world's highest level of technology, also incorporate Echizen washi papermaking and watermarking techniques.
Echizen Washi was also used for securities and stock certificates before they were digitized, and Echizen Washi is still used as the "official paper" for diplomas and other certificates. The Echizen washi villages, nurtured by this long history and tradition, continue to produce the highest quality, variety, and quantity of washi in Japan.
